Global Educational Resources and Fellowships

Students and Faculty of the College of Education and Human Sciences (CEHS), University of Nebraska-Lincoln preparing for the Gala to Support Global Education, September 27, 2013. The student led event included students in the Department of Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design, Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences and the Hospitality, Restaurant and Tourism Management area. Leadership provided by CEHS Faculty, Dr. Barbara Trout, Dr. Wendy Weiss, Dr. Gina Fe Causin, and Malaika Board members Kelli King and Dr. Beverly Curry. Attended by 500, the profits from the fund raiser provided fellowships for 12 global fellowships in 2014 and 2015.

Malaika encourages teachers and students to review and determine the most appropriate global educational references for use in the classroom and opportunities for global travel.

Aramco Educators to Saudi Arabia Program
The goal of this 10 day fully funded program is to produce educators knowledgeable about Saudia Arabia.

Fulbright Hays Seminars Abroad
Summer seminars designed to offer a broad and introductory cultural orientation to non-Western European countries for educators and administrators who have curriculum development responsibilities.

Fulbright Teacher Exchange Program
Opportunities for teacher and administrative direct exchanges with counterparts in another country.  Exchanges last one year, semester, or six-weeks.

Fund for Teachers
Applicants design their own study experience in the United States or abroad, illustrating how the study will impact their students and teaching. Funding up to $5,000 for individuals and $10,000 for teacher teams is awarded.

Fund for Teachers, introduced in Nebraska by The Malaika Foundation, has provided “…trips of a lifetime” to over 40 teachers. So far Nebraska teachers have traveled to more than 20 countries on five continents.

Global Educators Program
Teachers create short term team teaching or shadowing experiences in another country as part of professional development.  Participation requires enrollment in the “Gaining a Global Perspective through Cultural Immersion” graduate credit class at the University of St. Thomas, Minneapolis, MN.

Program focuses on improving global literacy and elevating environmental awareness in destinations such as China, South Africa, and Costa Rica.  An online graduate course is required prior to trip.

Japan Fulbright Memorial Fund Teacher Program
Fully funded immersion tour of Japan’s education system and culture.  The three-week experience includes a home stay, school visits, and cultural site tours.  No prior knowledge of Japanese required.

Ten-day study program of contemporary Japanese society for educators and administrators with curriculum design experience.

National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Seminars and Institutes
NEH offers educators tremendous opportunities to study humanities topics in a variety of summer programs.  Educators selected to participate receive a stipend to cover costs.  Past seminars have included programs in Greece, Turkey, and China.
