Generation Study Abroad is a five-year initiative of the Institute of International Education (IIE) to mobilize resources and commitments with the goal of doubling the number of U.S. students studying abroad by the end of the decade. There is no membership fee, but a commitment to facilitate and establish a target for study abroad. Nationwide, the figure is just 10%.

IIE is the only U.S. institution making this pledge to work with educators to dramatically increase this number. IIE is seeking at least 500 U.S. colleges and universities "to either double the number of their students studying abroad or significantly increase the participation rate of students who study abroad at some point during their undergraduate career". Later phases include mobilizing 1,000 high school teachers and engaging 10,000 alumni and students. For universities and colleges, the pledge should be signed by the college president or senior information officer describing briefly why the institution is joining the Generation Study Abroad commitment, the specific target you are setting and how you plan to achieve the target by the end of the decade. There are many advantages for this partnership for IIE is the most prestigious and largest U.S. institution committed to global education. They have offices in 19 countries and a staff of 800. IIE's core value is the goal of Opening Minds to the World. They manage the Fulbright fellowships plus hundreds of other scholarships globally.

1. Each year, 5-10 grants ($10,000) per year to the institutions who are making outstanding progress.
