The Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Program
The Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Program, which is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and is administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE), seeks to improve mutual understanding among teachers, their schools and communities in the U.S. and abroad. This program allows teachers to go abroad for three to six months to take classes at an international university, observe classes and offer seminars in local schools and complete a project of their own design.

Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships Program
The Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships (FLAS) Program provides grants to a select number of public and private institutions of higher education to enable them to offer competitive academic year and summer fellowships to meritorious undergraduate and graduate students annually. Students use the fellowships to pursue advanced training in modern foreign languages domestically or abroad, and either area studies or international studies. The structure of a FLAS program may be interdisciplinary or multi-disciplinary, including the humanities, social sciences, or other professional studies, and must include the study of the languages of the geographical area of specialization.

Eligibility: Institutions of higher education and consortia of institutions of higher education submit applications to the U.S. Department of Education to request FLAS grants (allocations of fellowships). Eligible undergraduate students and graduate students apply directly to an institution that has received an allocation of fellowships from the U.S. Department of Education.

Funding: Each fellowship includes an institutional payment and a subsistence allowance. The estimated institutional payment for an academic year 2010-2011 fellowship was $18,000 for a graduate student and $10,000 for an undergraduate student. The estimated institutional payment for a summer 2015/16 fellowship was $5,000 for graduate and undergraduate students.

Time Frame/Length: Institutions compete for fellowship allocations every four years.
